In Greece, olive oil has been used as a topical skincare agent for many centuries. Olive oil is a powerful antioxidant that contains the vitamins E and A, as well as the monounsaturated fatty acids that make it an anti-inflammatory. Overuse of expensive, chemical-based skincare products may dry your skin, leaving it irritated and inflamed over time. Olive oil is a popular addition to soaps and creams available on the market. Alone, it is a cheaper and more natural alternative for the rejuvenation of your skin and for treating common skin problems.
May Reduce Sun Damage
Olive oil is not a form of sunscreen; however the antioxidants in olive oil may protect your skin from sun damage. In a study from the journal "Carcinogenesis," olive oil applied after exposing hairless mice to UVB rays from the sun reduced the incidence of skin cancer. The researchers suggested that the antioxidants in the olive oil counteracted the harmful effects of the UVB rays. This study does not suggest going outside to sunbathe; however, using olive oil on a daily basis may serve as added protection from the sun and may be applied topically to soothe a sunburn.
Moisturizes Skin
The emollients in olive oil make it a soothing moisturizer. By applying a small amount of olive oil at bedtime and in the morning, your skin may feel hydrated and soft to the touch. A few tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil may also be added to bath water to achieve a similar effect. According to The Olive Oil Source, rubbing a few drops of olive oil into your nail beds and cuticles will soften the skin around your nails, thereby reducing hangnails, improving nail strength and improving shine.
Cleanses Skin
Olive oil emulsifies and cleanses the buildup of dirt and debris from your skin. The Olive Oil Source recommends rubbing a teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil into the palms of your hands and massaging it into your skin for at least a minute. This also acts as a makeup remover. Consistently using olive oil in this way may help to reduce the appearance of fine lines around your eyes.
