What Are the Secondary Effects of Hydroxycut?

Hydroxycut is one of the diet pills that was touted as a magic way to melt fat and see major weight loss results. However, in 2009 the makers of Hydroxycut called for a voluntary recall of most of their lines of products, due to the Food and Drug Administrations unfavorable warning that Hydroxycut could have serious health effects. Certain Hydroxycut products, including Hydroxycut Regular Rapid Release Caplets, Hydroxycut Natural and Hydroxycut Hardcore Drink Packets (Ignition Stix) can cause serious secondary effects that can make you uncomfortable or seriously harm your health.

Headaches and Dizziness

One of the first signs of a secondary side effect with Hydroxycut is headache, dizziness and nausea. This is mostly due to the concentration of active ingredients in Hydroxycut, which contains diet aids like ephedra, caffeine and guarana. These side effects are even apparent with the first few doses.

Loss of Appetite

Although it might sound helpful, the loss of appetite you experience with Hydroxycut is not intentional. In fact, it is a serious secondary effect that may point to a poorly functioning liver, which Hydroxycut seems to attack.

Jaundice

Not just for newborns, your skin may take on a sallow or yellow color when you've been taking Hydroxycut. Hydroxycut leads to higher liver enzymes, meaning your liver doesn't work as well at cleansing the blood as it should. Jaundice, in addition to making your skin discolored, may make you tired and nauseous as well.

Seizures

The FDA warned that as of May of 2009, 23 cases of major health problems were reported. One of the major health problems reported by Hydroxycut users was increased seizures. There are no sure signs that point to why users experienced seizures, but the FDA did note that these patients followed dosing instructions that were recommended by the Hydroxycut bottle.

Rhabdomyolysis

Rhabdomyolysis is a rare but very serious secondary effect of Hydroxycut that results in the breaking down of muscle fibers, which are then released into the bloodstream. These fibers can do major damage to the kidney and even result in kidney failure.

Liver Damage

Hydroxycut can so completely hurt the liver that it can cause the liver to fail altogether or damage it so badly to the point that it cannot function. In this case, liver transplants have been used to give patients better quality of life.

Death

The FDA warns that there has been one death of someone who was taking Hydroxycut as a diet aide. It was noted that this death was due to complete liver failure as a secondary effect of taking the drug.
