Eczema causes a red, itchy, and scaly rash on the skin that certainly isn't pleasant. Yet, something enjoyable-- food--may aggravate this skin condition that's also known as atopic dermatitis. While the foods that people eat don't directly cause eczema, sensitivities to certain foods seem to worsen the condition, especially among infants and children.

Milk and Dairy Products

Milk and the products made from it, such as cheese and yogurt, can often aggravate eczema by increasing its extent and severity, but it's unclear why milk and dairy products have that effect on people who suffer from eczema. People who want to determine whether or not milk and dairy products may be affecting their eczema can stop consuming dairy items for a while to see if that improves the condition of their skin.

Nuts

Nuts commonly aggravate eczema, so people with eczema can try eliminating nuts from their diet to see if doing so helps clear up some of their eczema. However, the American Academy of Dermatology cautions that people should eliminate just one type of food at a time so it's clear which changes may be affecting their eczema. They should discuss their plans with a dermatologist. Teens Health reports that food allergies, such as an allergy to nuts, have been associated with eczema, even though the exact relationship between the two conditions isn't yet clear.

Eggs

Eggs may aggravate eczema if people are allergic to them. Many people who suffer from eczema also suffer from allergies of some kind. Kids Health reports that allergies to eggs and some other foods like dairy products may make existing eczema worse or even trigger eczema to occur in the first place. If people are allergic to eggs, they'll usually notice symptoms such as eczema or hives on their skin within a few minutes or even as long as a few hours after eating eggs or foods that contain them. However, avoiding eggs can prove challenging for people, because they're a common ingredient in many foods. Therefore, people should carefully read ingredient lists when buying food and they should ask about foods that may contain eggs before they order in restaurants.
