Neem is an essential oil that is extracted from the neem tree, which is native to India. For centuries, it has been used as a natural pesticide, insect repellent and fungicide. It is also used in medicine for the treatment of skin disorders, such as eczema and psoriasis. You should consult a physician before using neem for psoriasis.

Psoriasis Symptoms

According to Medline Plus, psoriasis is a chronic skin disorder for which there is no cure. It has a number of symptoms, such as a buildup of plaque on the skin, particularly on the knees, elbows and feet; itchiness; soreness; and cracked skin. The disease can be quite debilitating and can cause considerable emotional distress.

Psoriasis Causes

Medline Plus explains that psoriasis in an immune system disorder. Psoriasis causes the body's T cells, or white blood cells, to over-react. This response leads to the overproduction of skin cells and inflammation. Although there is no cure, treatment outcomes for managing symptoms are quite positive, though patients do tend to have flare-ups that may be caused by diet, stress or ill health. Flare-ups are also sometimes seasonal.

Neem

Neem is an oil extracted from the neem tree, which is native to India. The Neem Foundation explains that neem has been used for centuries in the treatment of numerous ailments, such as athlete's foot, ringworm, chickenpox, Chagas disease and head lice. Neem has antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties.

Neem for Psoriasis

According to Neem Genie, neem oil is effective for the treatment of psoriasis because it contains a natural pain killer and can also provide relief from itching skin. It also says Neem may slow the growth of skin cells and reduce the thick buildup of skin plaque within four to seven days.

You should always seek the advice of a physician before using neem. According to Health Care Tips, neem may have a number of possible side effects, such as kidney malfunction. Neem should not be used on children, nor should you use it if you suffer from fatigue. Pregnant and nursing women should not use neem.
