A Superior Supplement
Magnesium glycinate is a form of supplemental magnesium and is considered to be the most gentle form of magnesium on the market. Many choose it over other magnesium forms such as magnesium oxide, citrate, sulphate or chloride because these types can lead to stool problems including diarrhea or constipation. It is also said to be the form most effectively and efficiently absorbed by the body, which means you can take lower doses and achieve optimal results. In fact, Millenium Nutritionals, an online specialty nutritional supplement website, claims that magnesium glycinate is up to five times more effective than magnesium oxide.
What It Does
The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements notes that the 1999-2000 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey suggests many adults in the United States, particularly elderly minorities, do not get enough magnesium in their diet. The mineral is said to help regulate high blood pressure and provide cardiovascular protection and may play a large role in diabetes by influencing the release and activity of insulin. Magnesium can also help improve bone density and relieve muscle cramps.
How Does It Do It?
Magnesium glycinate acts like other forms of magnesium and gets absorbed in the intestines. From there it travels through the blood stream to cells and tissues. It is estimated that anywhere from one-third to one-half of all magnesium ingested into the body gets absorbed and is used to benefit the body in ways discussed in section two. The rest gets eliminated after being processed and excreted by the kidneys.
