Yogalates was founded by Louise Solomon who was the first person to blend Yoga and Pilates together. A yogalates class is usually a workout mostly based on yoga principles, but that also incorporates some of the strengthening moves characteristic of Pilates. The class is a mind-body class and can be both relaxing and challenging. Calories burned during this workout will differ slightly based on height, weight and gender.

Beginner

A beginner yogalates class will usually consist of hatha yoga and easy Pilates exercises. An example of these types of moves could include the yoga postures mountain, downward dog, child pose, and a pilates plank. Calories burned during an hour-long beginner yogalates class with hatha yoga and pilates will be around 175 to 250 calories states Elysium Yoga . For a 150 pound person, this is an average of about three to four calories per minute.

Intermediate

Intermediate yogalates will increase the amount of calories burned as it advances yoga postures into Ashtanga yoga, combined with harder Pilates moves. A sample intermediate class would be warrior one pose, forward folds, with a Pilates roll down and one hundreds. Elysium Yoga explains that calories burned during an hour long intermediate Ashtanga yogalates class with pilates will be around 300 to 400. This is an average of four to five calories a minute for an average 150 pound person.

Advanced

Yogalates done on an advanced level will usually progress to Vinyasa yoga, or a dynamic form of yoga that connects postures and creates a flow between traditional yoga postures. A combination of Vinyasa with advanced Pilates will burn the most calories because of non-stop movement. An example of this workout might be warrior two into forward bridges, then a Pilates one hundred with legs off the mat, and a Pilates one minute plank hold on one foot. Calories burned during an hour long beginner yogalates class with Vinyasa yoga and pilates will be around 450 to 550 calories for a 150 pound person. This is an average of about seven to nine calories per minute depending on how quickly you move between postures and exercises.
