Caffeine is a naturally occurring substance found in the seeds, leaves and fruit of a wide array of plants, including cocoa beans and coffee. The University of Maryland Medical Center explains it may be added to some over-the-counter drugs such as appetite suppressants, cold medications and pain relievers. Three cups of coffee per day, considered moderate consumption, yields about 250mg of caffeine. UMMC cautions that excessive amounts of caffeine may produce side effects.

Blood Pressure

A study cited by "The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" shows that in a test involving the effects of caffeine compared to the increased amount of caffeine consumed, blood pressure can increase substantially. With 400mg of caffeine, which is about five 8 oz. cups of coffee, the systolic, or top number of the BP reading, increased by about 10mmHg after an hour.

Heart Rate

"The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" notes that as the intake of caffeine increases, so does the heart rate and pulse. With the initial consumption of caffeine, the heart rate initially decreases three to four beats per minute after 30 to 90 minutes, then increases. As more caffeine is consumed, the heart rate and pulse rises significantly.

Insomnia

Large doses of caffeine may numb the body against the signs of fatigue, the University of Michigan Health Services warns. Effects of caffeine in individuals may vary; however, 250mg of caffeine consumed at one sitting may be sufficient to produce sleeplessness, nervousness and anxiety. Larger amounts may lead to sleep deprivation, tremors and sweating.
