Acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease, is the movement of gastric contents into the esophagus. Normally, pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter prevents the backflow of gastric contents from the esophageal mucosa. An incompetent lower esophageal sphincter is believed to be the primary cause of acid reflux and esophageal inflammation. To minimize the effects of acid reflux, it is important to know what foods to avoid.
Fried and Fatty Foods, Onion, Potatoes and Dairy Products
Fried and fatty foods are among the worst food offenders that aggravate acid reflux symptoms. Fried foods and dairy products are considered to be fatty foods because of their high fat content. Fatty foods are also difficult to digest for because they stay in the stomach longer. Fried and fatty foods are difficult to eliminate from the body, and they can trigger acid reflux into the esophagus. Nocturnal reflux of stomach contents may lead to pulmonary aspiration. According to the Mayo Clinic, sufferers of acid reflux should avoid onions, potatoes and other fatty foods. Onions and potatoes are said to be among the most common culprits in triggering acid reflux and heart burn.
Spicy Foods and Chocolate
Acid reflux may result in esophagitis from prolonged vomiting or an incompetent lower esophageal sphincter. Esophagitis is the inflammation of the esophageal sphincter. It is precipitated by ingestion of spicy and fatty foods. Obstruction due to permanent strictures may develop, causing difficulty in swallowing. Mucosal irritation may cause bleeding, eventually producing anemia. According to the National Digestive Disease Information Clearinghouse, chocolate has large amounts of caffeine and fat that can also trigger acidity and overstress the digestion process.
Citrus, Caffeinated and Alcoholic Beverages
According to MedHelp.org, a person with acid reflux should avoid beverages such as caffeine and alcohol because they can weaken the lower sphincter muscle and cause acid reflux. Other causes of esophagitis may be associated with ingestion of strong acids or alkali beverages. Citrus beverages produce a lot of acid, which can contribute to acid reflux and esophagitis. These beverages not only weaken the esophagus but can also increase the content of acid in the stomach and may bloat the abdomen.
