Applying cosmetics can be a daunting process. After all, hundreds of products promising to do this or fix that can both overwhelm and exhaust you. The same may be true for foundation and concealer. Although some use the products interchangeably, the two have very different purposes. Concealer is often thicker, and you should use it sparingly. As the name implies, it conceals blemishes and discoloration. Foundation is applied to the entire face and comes in powder, liquid or matte form. It evens out complexions and serves as a base for the rest of your makeup, states Marie Claire magazine.

Step 1

Select a foundation in a shade that matches your skin tone. If necessary, purchase two foundation colors and mix them to create a custom shade. Choose a liquid foundation for heavier coverage, and a powder foundation for lighter coverage.

Step 2

Pour a dime-size amount of liquid foundation onto your fingers or a cosmetic wedge sponge. For powder, dip an all-over cosmetic face brush into the powder.

Step 3

Determine which colors of corrective concealer you need. According to the website WomanJunction, you should use a neutral-shade concealer for dark under-eye circles or bruises and a green-hued concealer for blemishes or red marks.

Step 4

Apply the liquid or powder foundation directly to your face. Blend into your skin until no lines are visible. Make sure your entire face is covered with the foundation.

Step 5

Apply a small amount of concealer to either a fine brush, pointy cotton swab, cosmetic wand or your fingers. Place on the affected areas and blend thoroughly into the skin.
