Chocolate malted milk balls -- characterized by a crunchy malted milk center covered with milk chocolate -- were originally created in 1873 by pharmacist James Horlick. Designed as a lightweight chocolate nutritional supplement for infants, chocolate malted milk balls quickly grew in popularity among candy lovers. Traditional chocolate malted milk balls contain a high amount of calories, fat and carbohydrates, but sugar-free chocolate malted milk balls can significantly reduce calories and sugars.

Types

Malted milk balls are available in a variety of types, including milk chocolate, dark chocolate, peanut butter and strawberry. Each flavor can be a snack on-the-go or added to desserts such as ice cream. Most of the flavors will contain similar nutrition facts, but the sugar-free malted milk balls contain fewer calories and carbohydrates.

Features

Traditional malted milk balls will typically include sugar, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup or other sweeteners as the primary ingredients. Sugar-free chocolate malted milk balls, however, start with maltitol -- a sugar substitute -- and cocoa butter. Additional ingredients include whole milk, chocolate liquor, soy lecithin and vanilla. Some sugar-free malted milk balls may contain small amounts of sugar from the corn syrup or trace amounts of sugar in the ingredient list. Possible allergens in the sugar-free malted milk balls include peanuts, tree nuts, dairy and wheat.

Size

One serving of traditional malted milk balls made from milk chocolate contains 190 calories per serving -- about 18 pieces or 41g -- with 60 calories from fat. Sugar-free malted milk balls contain 105 calories per 20 g serving. As a result, the calorie content is actually similar to the traditional malted milk balls.

Effects

While the total carbohydrate content is reduced from 31 g to 25 g, the fat content is higher per each 40 g serving in the sugar-free chocolate malted milk balls. One 40 g serving of the traditional milk chocolate balls contains 7 g of total fat and 7g of saturated fat while the sugar free balls contain 11 g of total fat and 7 g of saturated fat. Protein content is about 1 g per serving in both types.

Benefits

Calcium and sodium are the only significant minerals found in sugar-free chocolate malted milk balls. One serving contains about 4 percent of the daily recommended intake of calcium and 1 percent of sodium.
