When you eat high amounts of protein and reduce your carbohydrate intake, your body goes into a state of ketosis. This means fat is being used for energy instead of carbohydrates. If you are following a high-protein diet, there are several foods that you should know about that contain lots of protein and few carbohydrates.

Meat

Beef is high in protein, low in carbs, high in fat and it also has iron. Steak, beef tips, sirloin, beef patties, London broil, livers and kidneys are all examples of these. Pork, chicken, turkey, duck, venison, bison and lamb are all other types of meat that are high in protein and low in carbs. A 4-oz. lean steak has approximately 34g of protein and zero carbs. About 3 oz. of cooked chicken breast has just under 27g of protein and zero carbs. A 3-oz. serving of pork chops has about 24g of protein and no carbs.

Processed Meats

Meats also get processed into other forms that are high in protein and low in carbs. Sausage, hot dogs, porketta, ham, bacon and cold cuts are all examples of these. If any type of meat were to get breaded and deep fried, it would no longer be low-carb because bread has carbs.

Fish

With the exception of clod water fish, all forms are low in fat. They are also high in protein and low in carbs. Examples of these include sea bass, anchovies, salmon, striped bass, herring, cod, halibut, mackerel, snapper, sturgeon and monkish. Shellfish and other types of seafood such as oysters, clams, shrimp, lobster and scallops are also high in protein and low in carbs.

Eggs

Eggs are high in vitamin B12, choline, amino acids and fat. They are also high in protein and low in carbs. This also includes just the whites and any preparation of them such as fried, hard boiled, soft boiled, deviled or poached. One large egg contains approximately 6g of protein and 1g of carbs.

Cheese

Dairy products are high in calcium, and some types are high in protein and low in carbs. All forms of milk and yogurt have a moderate amount of carbs and protein, but cheese is the lowest. One oz. of regular American cheese has just over 6g of protein and about 0.5g of carbs.
