How Does the Weight Watchers' Core Plan Work?

Basics of Weight Watchers Core Plan

Understand how the Weight Watchers core plan will let you eat more and lose weight. You don't feel deprived on this core plan, as you are allowed to eat until you are full. Instead of the traditional calorie, or point, counting in Weight Watchers, the core plan allows you to eat more volume.

Types of Foods Allowed

The core plan relies on high-fiber, low calorie foods that fill you up quickly. Foods such as whole grains, broths, lean meats, fruits, vegetables and nonfat dairy products are generally allowed.

Specific Foods on Core Plan

Go to the Weight Watchers website to find foods allowed in the core program. Go to a food group, such as dairy, and click on core foods in that area. You may need to register with the program to see all of the approved foods. Use all of the allowed food groups to plan all of your meals.

Fill Pantry With Core Foods

Get rid of high-calorie foods in your home that are empty calories; these foods don't provide fiber and contain too much sugar or fat. You can have these foods once in awhile, but your kitchen mostly should contain the core foods to be successful. Types of foods to throw away and eliminate from your diet: white rice, high-sugar breakfast cereals, soda and candy.

Switch Between Core, Traditional Plans

On the core plan, you can go back and forth between counting points and living the core method. Both will help you lose weight, so follow whatever you feel you can do. Keep track of how you are using both methods.

Join Local Meetings, Sign Up Online

To get support in following the Weight Watchers core plan, you can attend a local support meeting or sign up online. You will get additional resources to follow the plan by signing up. Use some or all of these resources to lose weight.

Exercise Part of Core Plan

Weight watchers recommends at least 30 minutes of exercise each day to reach desired results under any of their plans.

Track Weight Loss Weekly

Whether you go to meetings or attend online, you need to track your weight loss under the Core plan to see if it is working. Core followers can safely lose 1 to 2 pounds a week.
