The Best Body Wraps for Weight Loss

Body wraps encourage temporary weight loss by drawing toxins and excess fluid out of the body. Most body wraps, according to Greta Breedlove, author of "The Herbal Home Spa," have the same basic ingredients: bentonite clay, sea salt and water. The best body wraps for weight loss, however, combine those basic ingredients with essential oils. According to Valerie Ann Worwood, author of "The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy," several essential oils add fat- and weight-loss properties to the standard clay wrap. Essential oils should never be directly applied to the skin. Always dilute them by mixing them into the wrap paste. Check with a health care provider before using body wraps for weight loss.

Diuretic Wraps

Diuretic wraps pull water out of the tissues, resulting in both weight loss and loss of inches. These wraps are effective for quick, short-term weight loss --- such as needing to lose inches quickly for an event or to fit into an article of clothing. The average loss, according to Greta Breedlove, is 1-to-2 inches. These types of wraps are temporary, lasting only 24 to 48 hours -- as you consume liquids, the fluid returns to the tissues. Body wraps with fennel, celery and grapefruit essential oils all have diuretic effects. Oregano and cypress, in addition to lemon and juniper essential oils all have diuretic effects. Blending several drops of each oil together, and adding the blend to the wrap mixture, has the best effect.

Thermogenic Wraps

Thermogenic wraps generate heat to burn fat. Like the diuretic wraps they cause an immediate loss of inches, but they also work long-term. Over time, with continued use, these wraps can help tone and reduce fat in problem areas. Cinnamon, peppermint and clove all have warming effects, while basil, pettigraine and rosemary essential oils all have toning effects. Blend several drops of these oils together and add the blend to the wrap mixture for the best effect.

Anti-Cellulite Wraps

Anti-cellulite wraps do not cause weight loss, per se, but they can smooth the skin and improve the appearance of problem areas. Cedarwood, cypress and thyme essential oils in addition to patchouli and sage are said to be effective anti-cellulite treatments. According to Greta Breedlove, you can blend these oils with the diuretic and thermogenic oils to achieve weight loss effects and improve your skin texture.
