Swollen Foot Problems

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), swollen feet and ankles are a widespread problem especially among the elder population. Swollen feet may also be caused by certain medications, obesity and sometimes serious medical conditions. There are a number of home care remedies that can relieve the problems associated with swollen feet.

Effects & Symptoms

When an unusual amount of fluids accumulate in tissues it is referred to as peripheral edema. The force of gravity draws the fluid down to your feet, making them swell. Swollen feet and legs can also occur due to injury or disease-related inflammation.
The symptoms associated with swollen feet may include stiffness, discomfort and pain. The swelling may extend to the ankles and legs and cause problems with walking.

Medicinal Problems

Some medications may result in swollen feet. They include high-estrogen oral contraceptives, blood pressure calcium channel blockers (nifedipine, amlodipine), certain antidepressants (nortriptyline, desipramine) and steroids.

Situational Causes

A number of conditions can make your feet swell. An injury or trauma, an extended period of standing, lengthy rides in automobiles and airplanes, insect bites and sometimes menstruation may bring about swelling in the feet.

Underlying Conditions

Swollen feet may also be a symptom of a medical condition such as leg infections, blood clots, varicose veins and lymph node blockage in the legs (lymphatic obstruction). Serious health issues related to feet swelling may include failure of the liver, kidneys or heart.

Treatment

The treatment for swollen feet will depend on what if any primary conditions are causing the symptom. In some cases, your doctor may recommend diuretics to help minimize swelling.
Home remedies to reduce swelling of the feet include elevating and exercising your legs, wearing support stockings and eating a diet that is low in salt. This may help decrease fluid retention. If you are overweight, try to shed excess pounds.
Consult your doctor if there appears to be no obvious reason for your swollen feet and if you are experience chest pain or problems breathing.
