Whether you are a serious fisherman or just out for an adventure, deep sea fishing offers a day of fun and excitement. Fishing charters leave from Tarpon Springs, Florida, for all-day fishing trips in the Gulf of Mexico. There are no guarantees that you will catch "the big one" but if you like being on the water and are up for a day of fun and adventure, a deep sea fishing charter might be just what you are looking for.

Location

Tarpon Springs is located in West Central Florida on the Gulf Coast just 22 miles north of Tampa. The town is home to the historic Sponge Docks where sponge divers bring in their harvest. Visitors can shop in the local shops for shells, soaps, trinkets and, of course, sponges in all shapes and sizes. If you are looking for Greek food, the Greek restaurants and bakeries across from the sponge docks serve authentic dishes. Tarpon Springs has hot, humid summers with highs reaching into the high 80s and mild winters with lower humidity and low temperatures around 50 degrees, making Tarpon Springs favorable for year-round visits.

Charter Boats

Deep sea fishing charters go out daily from Tarpon Springs; however, it is a good idea to check ahead in case of rough seas or inclement weather, which may effect the charters. Blue Fin Deep Sea Fishing boat is a 65-foot Bonner Head Boat designed to be safe and seaworthy for fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. It heads out into Tampa Bay for bottom fishing and a memorable experience. A snack bar is available on board. Two Georges, an 80-foot aluminum boat, has been operating for 50 years. The boat has been well maintained and upgraded. It is operated by Dolphin Deep Sea Fishing, Inc. The boat includes a fully-stocked snack bar serving burgers, sandwiches, chips, soft drinks, water and beer. Both charters offer an air conditioned cabin to get in out of the sun and relax. Restrooms are available on board for your convenience.

Equipment

All of the fishing charters provide everything you need for an enjoyable and successful day of fishing. Your fishing license, permits, life jackets, fishing tackle and bait are all included on the boats. Boats provide coolers and ice for your catch. You are welcome to bring your own tackle, but the boats have everything you need on board. The Two Georges and Blue Fin both use their state-of-the-art fish finder to help the captains locate the best fishing spots for you, hoping to provide passengers with a successful experience.

What To Bring

For your fishing excursion you should bring along a cooler if you wish to take your fish home. For protection from the Florida sun it is a good idea to bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. You might also want to bring a camera to capture your memories, especially if this is your first time out. During cooler months a light jacket or windbreaker is recommended as it can be cooler on the water than it is on shore. Rain gear is also a good idea if the weather threatens. You are welcome to bring your own food and drinks aboard in coolers on the Blue Fin. Beer is welcome, but be sure it is in cans only. No hard liquor is permitted. If you are prone to sea sickness you may want to come prepared with medication to help you through the day.

The Catch

Of course the catch varies from day to day, but in the waters off Tarpon Springs you can expect to catch red snapper, amberjack, sea bass, grunts and Florida's favorite, grouper. Your captain will know where to go to make the most of your day. You may take your catch home with you.

Rates

The Blue Fin fishing boat has 10-hour day or night trips for $80 per person, as of 2010. The company also offer overnight trips from 27 to 36 hours beginning at $225. A 48-hour deep water excursion is $450. On the Two Georges, an 8-hour day trip is $60 for adults and $50 for children 5 to 12 years. Children under 5 are free.
