The area of South Miami is known for its abundance of sunshine and renowned beaches. Although the area also has a variety of activities that will encourage you to get active, such as tennis and swimming, some activities, such as rock climbing, will challenge you out of your comfort zone. Of course there also are calming and restorative exercises such as wandering through local nature preserves.
Tennis
One way to stay active in South Miami is to head out for a game of tennis. Across Miami there are 11 parks that have public tennis courts. When looking for a South Miami tennis court, consider heading to Shenandoah Park. As of 2010, hourly court fees are $2 for residents and $3 for non-residents. If you are looking for a more official experience, the Brickell Tennis Club offers lessons and clinics. This club is located on South Miami Avenue and is operated by Cliff Drysdale Tennis. The club offers memberships and discounted court fees for local residents. Lessons are offered to individuals of all tennis skill levels.
Aquatics
Cool off from the warm Miami heat by taking a dip in a local pool. The city of Miami has 11 aquatic centers, several of which are open year round. When looking for a pool in South Miami, head to the Shenandoah Pool which is open year round and offers water aerobics, open swims, lap swimming times, a swim team and swimming lessons. As of 2010, admission to the Shenandoah Pool is $1 for adults. Children under 18 enter free.
Parks
What a better way to get outside and soak up some South Florida sun than in one of the many parks scattered throughout Miami. The city of Miami manages more than 100 parks. These parks feature a diverse variety of recreational facilities and activities. These activities include sports fields, nature paths and protected environmental areas. One South Miami park, Simpson Park, situated in the heart of Brickell is a nature preserve that features a variety of threatened and endangered plant species.
Healthy Eats
Take advantage of the abundance of fresh produce grown in Florida and head to a local farmers market. Located in South Miami is the Green South Miami Farmers Market. This market is situated in front of the South Miami City Hall and is open year round on Saturdays. The market, which is run by Earth Learning, sells sustainably grown produce including meats, dairy products, fruits, vegetables and a variety of handmade crafts. The market runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Indoor Activities
When the weather outside has turned sour or if you just want a break from the sun, there are still a variety of indoor activities to keep you active in South Miami. One example is X-treme Rock Climbing. In addition to rock climbing, this facility offers yoga lessons and a full exercise gym. The gym has more than 14,000 square feet of climbing space, routes placed by nationally certified route setters and numerous roofs and overhangs to challenge even the most experienced climbers.
