An estimated one-third of people in the United States have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep through the night at some point during their lives, according to MayoClinic.com. If you are one of these people, you may find that the ingredients in Sominex help you get the restorative sleep you need to function at optimal levels throughout the day.
Diphenhydramine
The primary active ingredient in Sominex is diphenhydramine, a type of antihistamine that induces sleepiness. One two-tablet dose of Sominex Original Formula or one single caplet dose of Sominex Maximum Strength Formula contain 50 mg of diphenhydramine, according to GlaxoSmithKline, the pharmaceutical distributor of Sominex. Diphenhydramine works by helping your body relax, enabling you fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night.
Inactive Ingredients
Sominex also contains a number of inactive ingredients that stabilize this medication and help it dissolve properly in your body. These inactive ingredients include dibasic calcium phosphate, microcrystalline cellulose, silicon dioxide, starch and magnesium stearate. Additionally, Sominex contains FD&C Blue 1, which gives this medication a light blue color.
Side Effects
While taking Sominex, you may experience side effects caused by diphenhydramine. Upset stomach side effects, including nausea, vomiting, constipation or loss of appetite, may occur, PubMed Health reports. You may also feel drowsy, dizzy, weak, nervous or unusually excited. Nasal or oral dryness may occur, which may cause sneezing, nasal congestion, dry mouth or throat discomfort. If you experience blurred vision or problems urinating while taking Sominex, seek care from a medical professional as soon as possible.
