How to Compare Tooth Whiteners

Tooth whiteners are a line of products used to make your smile brighter. Even with regular brushing and annual cleanings at your dentist, you may need extra help to keep your teeth white. After using tooth whiteners, you should consider avoiding substances that can stain the teeth. This includes cigarettes and coffee.

Step 1

Compare the cost of tooth whiteners. When compared to in-office whitening procedures, which can run upwards of $500 per visit, at-home tooth whiteners are relatively inexpensive. Over the counter sets will cost between $20 and $100. You can find pricing information as well as specifications for the products through online drugstores that sell the sets.

Step 2

Consider the time frame for the tooth whiteners. Teeth whitening products have different time frames for suggested use. For instance, Target Brand produces a 7-Day Advanced Whitening System, while Crest Whitestrips has a 14-day program.

Step 3

Review the concentration of hydrogen peroxide found in the tooth whiteners. Whiteners with a concentration of 10 percent or more will work in a shorter time frame, typically three to seven days while 6 percent concentrations can take two weeks or longer to work.

Step 4

Determine the application process. The tooth whitener that you choose should be easy for you to apply. The easiest method is whitening toothpaste that is used daily when you brush your teeth. There are also removable adhesives and dissolving strips that can be applied to the enamel in order to whiten.

Step 5

Look for the ADA seal of approval. Certain at home whitening products will carry the American Dental Association seal of approval at the product packaging. Some examples of ADA approved tooth whiteners include Colgate Total Plus Whitening Gel, Crest Multicare Whitening Toothpaste and Opalescence Whitening Gel.

Tips and Warnings

  • Consult your dentist if you experience any side effects from the tooth whiteners, such as gum sensitivity and teeth discoloration.
