Arthritis can cause pain and stiffness in areas of the body, most notably the joints. Inflammation of the joints can cause serious damage over time. According to the CDC, arthritis is the most common cause of disability in the U.S. limiting nearly 19 million adults. Certain nutritional foods may bring relief if you suffer from arthritis, although there is no sufficient scientific data to illustrate its efficacy.
Seafood
Carol Eustice says in her book "The Everything Health Guide to Arthritis," that seafood is an excellent source of selenium, which keeps the immune system properly working to reduce aggravation to arthritis. This is especially helpful to those who suffer from osteoarthritis--the breakdown of cartilage in the joints. Selenium and antioxidants help to slow this process, Eustice writes. Swordfish, salmon, tuna, oysters and shrimp provide essential levels of selenium for a balanced and healthy diet.
Foods Rich in Vitamin A
Certain vitamin A laden foods may be an effective dietary means to relieve arthritis while delivering quality nutrition. According to Jason Theodosakis, in his book "The Arthritis Cure: The Medical Miracle That Can Halt, Reverse and May Even Cure," beta carotene--the plant form of vitamin A--is effective in safeguarding the body against free radicals, which contributes to arthritis. Yellow-orange fruits and vegetables like apricots, pumpkin, carrots, peaches and potatoes contain ample amounts of beta-carotene. Dark green leafy vegetables like spinach, collard greens, parsley and spinach are also suitable, Theodosakis writes.
Non-Animal Products
Eustice recommends eating anti-inflammatory foods like fruits and vegetables. Many meat and dairy products contain arachidonic acid, which can increase inflammation. Refraining from meat and dairy products that are high in saturated fat can reduce inflammation for pain relief. She recommends eating monounsaturated items like extra virgin olive oil in tandem with omega-3 fatty acids found in flaxseed oil. Items like bananas, tomatoes, celery, pineapple, citrus fruits and tofu provide essential vitamins that those suffering from arthritis are usually deficient in, including folic acid, calcium, magnesium, zinc, vitamins B6 and B12.
