To play volleyball at a high level, players have to understand game situations and know how to execute plays to near perfection. For teammates to get familiar with each other so they can play intuitively when the game is on the line, practice sessions must hone their skills. Two-player drills can give teammates a gameplan to follow.

Pit Drill

Two players are on one side of the net and the coach stands on the opposite side. He starts the drill with a tip that one of the players must dig out and then the other teammates sets up the first for a spike. Keep repeating the drill, but the coach will send the ball to different locations on the court and each player will get the opportunity to play both roles.

Set And Spike

In this drill, one player works as the setter and the other as the spiker. The coach will toss a ball to the setter in the middle. She will send the ball high to the right side of the court and the spiker will come down and deliver a power shot designed to put the point away. Then the coach will send another ball to the setter, who will then send a high ball to the left side of the court. The spiker is running while the second ball is being set up so she can spike the second ball. Switch positions and repeat the drill.

Double-Ball Control

In this drill, players will set up about 10 feet from each other to start out. Player one has the ball and tosses it up in the air to himself and then passes it to his partner. Player two receives the ball, hits it up in the air to himself and then passes to his teammate. The two players keep this up until they can control the ball and pass it successfully 10 times back and forth. At that point, increase the distance so it becomes a greater challenge. Do this until you are 20 feet away from your partner.
