With all of the information connecting excess weight to impaired health, losing extra pounds has become a necessity among the health-conscious. Being consistent with a diet is difficult for some people, but the Idiot-Proof Diet was designed to help those who have problems staying committed to a special diet for long periods. Proposed by India Knight and Neris Thomas, both of whom lost just over 70 pounds with what they call "minimal trauma," the diet is available online.

Strategy

Also known as "Fat Loss 4 Idiots," the Idiot-Proof Diet offers you the option of losing weight while eating regular foods, pointing out the following as unsuccessful dieting strategies: Reducing your caloric intake, which will initiate an adjustment in your metabolism to burn only as many calories as you supply; lowering your fat intake, which will make no appreciable difference; and lowering your carbohydrate intake, which will decrease your energy and "make you miserable." According to the Idiot-Proof Diet, 11 days of dieting followed by three days of eating according to your personal desires will result in weight loss.

Eat More, Lose More

The Idiot-Proof Diet asserts that in 11 days you will be noticeably thinner while eating more than three meals per day. Fat burning is supposedly switched on and off by food consumption, and the underlying directive is eating the right foods at the right times. The diet is built on the calorie-shifting technique.

Calorie Shifting

Calorie shifting means changing your caloric and nutrient intake each day, which keeps your metabolism in high gear. Your metabolism does not slow down, nor does it adapt to a specific rate. This process claims to cause you to lose weight faster that the average diet because it tricks your body into burning more calories.

The Diet

Four meals per day, preferably prepared at home and eaten at 2.5-hour intervals, follow a specific alternation pattern of carbohydrate- and protein rich-foods, rotated both through the day and over the 11-day dieting period. You can eat until satisfied, but can't overeat, and drinks should have 10 calories or less per glass. Sweets and condiments should be avoided, and eight to10 glasses of water per day is suggested. The online book lets you choose from suggested foods to create your meals, including hamburger, chicken, fruit, cottage cheese and pasta. Thirty minutes of walking twice per day is recommended.

Considerations

The diet is web-based, so it is readily available. There is a money-back guarantee, and the three-day "eat what you like" session at the end of each 11-day cycle might make dieting easier for some people. For those who would prefer not to go without, the diet even allows limited amounts of alcohol.
