Fishing is a healthy activity that promotes relaxation, exercises your mind and keeps your body active. Stretch as you cast your line, concentrate on your strategy for catching a trophy fish and enjoy quiet moments alone, together with family or friends. Miami's sunshine, warm weather and proximity to the ocean and freshwater fishing locations make it an ideal destination for fishing enthusiasts.

Fishing In State Parks

Fish off of the pier or along the shores of the Intracoastal Waterway at Oleta River State Park. Oleta River State Park is located in the heart of Miami, along the shores of Bicayne Bay and Oleta River. If you'd like to try your hand at surf fishing, take a 30-minute drive north of Miami to John U. Lloyd State Park in Dania Beach. The park is a popular destination for surf fishing in addition to other activities such as hiking, boating, swimming and snorkeling.

Fishing Charters

Hire a charter for professional guidance. Companies such as Mimi Sportfishing, Kelley Fleet, Ace Blue Water Charters, Off Limits Fishing Charters or Captain Jay's Deep Sea Fishing Miami offer charter fishing services for fishermen of all ages and skill levels. Charter companies offer a variety of excursions including deep sea fishing, swordfish fishing and fishing at the site of shipwrecks. Whether you are a novice or a seasoned angler, charter companies can assist you in finding the best areas to fish and provide equipment, bait and a professional captain. The crew will provide you with the most effective fishing techniques and styles for the weather and current conditions.

Freshwater Fishing

Go bass fishing in Tamiami Canal. The canal varies in width --- ranging from 40 to more than 100 feet ---and is more than 27-miles long. Catch freshwater fish such as butterfly peacock, tarpon, snook and largemouth bass. March, April and May are the ideal months for catching butterfly peacock. Largemouth bass are more prevalent when the water cools, making winter time and early morning and late evening the ideal times for bass fishing.

Types of Fish

Miami is located approximately two miles from the Gulfstream and several artificial reefs. Catch saltwater fish such as mahi-mahi, wahoo, tuna, blue marlin, sailfish and swordfish in the open water. Reefs are ideal environments for fish such as snapper, kingfish and grouper. Catch freshwater fish such as largemouth bass or tarpon in nearby lakes and canals.

Considerations

Anyone the age of 16 and older is required by the state to have a Florida fishing license. Non-residents can purchase a three-day, seven-day or full-year non-resident fishing license. Purchase the license online with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, on the phone by calling 888-347-4350 or in local shops such as K-Mart, Walmart or Bass Pro Shops.
