Fishing enthusiasts in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan enjoy both a short summer season and an active ice-fishing season. Depending on the time of year and location, anglers can reel in trout, coho, bass and even salmon. Fishing spots to suit every fisherman are plentiful along the miles of coastline on both Lake Michigan and Lake Superior and the many trout streams.

Streams and Waterways

The Upper Peninsula of Michigan has a vast, wild network of streams and waterways that are perfect for trout fishing. An estimated 36,000 miles of waterways are navigable. The Fox, the Two-Hearted and the Yellow Dog are some of the better known streams that are excellent for catching trout, and several books document many others. Another option for prime fishing is to hire a local guide who can locate the best spots.

Lake Superior Fishing

Lake Superior offers year-round fishing excitement with lake trout, splake, coho salmon and even pike making good options. Many charter fishing services offer trips, but fishing from the shoreline can also provide results. Other fishing options include the extended Anna River fishing pier, located just east of Munising, and the Munising Dock Break Wall, which both allow anglers to cast into deep, clear waters.

Inland Lake Fishing

Michigan's Upper Peninsula has several hundred clear water inland lakes with fishing spots from shore or boat. Many are remote spots that offer solitude for the angler looking to get away from the crowds. Yellow perch, bluegill and black crappie are good possibilities. Good lakes to fish include South Manistique Lake, Crooked Lake, Deer Lake, AuTrain Lake, Triangle Lake and Lake Gogebic.

Ice Fishing

The Upper Peninsula of Michigan offers excellent options for ice fishing. Anglers who want to venture into ice fishing must determine conditions such as ice thickness, snow depth, springs, inflowing rivers, and channels when ice fishing. Local guides, resort owners and bait shops can all provide information on conditions. Lake Gogebic, Lac Vieux Desert, Keweenaw Bay/Huron Bay, Vermilac Lake and Portage Lake are suitable lakes in the area for ice fishing.

Most Common Fish

The waters in and around the Upper Peninsula of Michigan holds primarily northern pike, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, muskie, walleye, trout, perch and pan fish, along with salmon during season. Anglers must know which type of lures and gear to use given the type of fish and conditions. Experienced guides and outfitters are available in most areas of the region.
