Having a dark tan has become associated with youth, health and beauty by some. Tanning beds, self-tanners and spray-tan booths are methods to add color to your skin. Having a dark tan can change the overall appearance of your body. Tan skin can mask facial blemishes, make you look slimmer, help decrease the appearance of cellulite and make your muscles look more defined. Suntan lotion is not necessary to achieve your skin's darkest tan.

Step 1

Use a self-tanner lotion. Look for self tanning lotion with dihydroxyacetone, which reacts with the outermost layer of the skin to darken the skin's appearance, according to MayoClinic.com. Exfoliate the skin with a body scrub or exfoliation glove to remove dead skin cells and help the lotion absorb easily. Choose a self-tanner in the darkest shade available. Apply self tanning lotion evenly all over your body. Allow the self-tanner to dry.

Step 2

Make an appointment for a spray tan. Visit a spray-tan booth to achieve an instant dark tan. Exfoliate your skin the night before getting sprayed tan to help the color distribute evenly. Select the darkest level of tan. Don't shower for 24 hours to let the color completely dry.

Step 3

Go to the tanning bed. Select the bed that provides the darkest tan. Lie in the tanning bed for the recommended amount of time. Allow your skin to rest for 24 to 48 hours before returning to the tanning bed. Relaxing in a tanning bed exposes the skin to UVA rays that are 12 times stronger than the sun, states Vanderbilt University.

Tips and Warnings

  • Wear sunscreen to protect the skin when out in the sun.
  • Consult your physician if you experience skin irritation from tanning or tanning products.
