There are many ways to ring in the New Year, and as the fourth-largest city in the United States, Houston offers some of the most diverse options around. Whether you want to celebrate the holiday with a family outing or kick off your resolutions with fitness activities, Houston boasts several unique events to help you greet the New Year.

Discovery Green

Discovery Green, located in downtown Houston, is a public park that offers a variety of family-friendly activities throughout the New Year's holiday. Take in one of several art exhibits scattered across the park, or check out the Gloworama events, including a 3D light show and parade. For a more interactive experience, be sure and pack your mittens to keep warm while ice-skating on Kinder Lake. As of 2010, admission for the rink is $10 and includes the cost of skate rental and tax.

Children's Museum

For a more traditional New Year's celebration, head to the Children's Museum of Houston for New Year's Noon. For the cost of general museum admission, you can enjoy a parade, live music and educational activities for the kids. This event is geared towards families, moving up the traditional New Year's countdown from midnight to noon, so that children can participate in ringing in the New Year.

Downtown Aquarium

Another option for families is the balloon drop at the Downtown Aquarium. The event is three hours long, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., and includes music and a meal. The price of admission ranges from $9.99 to $15.99, depending on age, and is free for children under age 3.

Health and Fitness

If you're more focused on following through on your New Year's resolutions, then consider heading to Canino Produce for a wide variety of healthy foods. Open from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., this Houston farmers' market emphasizes Texas produce. Or for a more ambitious start to the year, the 12th annual Texas Marathon in Kingwood, Texas, begins at 8:00 a.m. on New Year's Day.

Holiday Deals

If you're feeling budget-conscious, there are several offers in and around Houston for New Year's. The Houston Zoo is offering free admission on New Year's Day and is open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. You can also take in the free trolley service that runs to several downtown destinations, including Discovery Green and the Theater District.
