Black skin can become dry if the skin is cleansed with a commercially produced soap, or hydrated with a lotion that contains harsh chemical ingredients. When black skin becomes overly dry, it can start to flake, which causes the skin to take on an ashy appearance. To alleviate this, clean and treat black skin using home remedies or natural skincare products that only use healthful, nourishing ingredients that will keep the skin clear and smooth.
Step 1
Clean and soften the skin using a natural cleansing method. Soaps often contain ingredients that strip the skin of oils, or contain chemicals that can cause an allergic reaction on the skin. Instead of using a commercially produced soap to clean your skin, use a non-comedogenic oil. Firmly massage olive oil into the skin for two minutes. Lay a hot, wet washcloth over your face, which will release steam onto the skin. The steam will open the pores and allow the oils, dirt and impurities to exit the skin. After the cloth cools, wipe the rest of the oil away from the skin.
Step 2
Exfoliate and brighten the skin using a natural facial scrub. Exfoliating with natural materials helps remove dead skin from a black complexion without damaging or drying out the skin. Combine 2 tbsp. of honey, 1 tbsp. of baking soda, and 2 tbsp. of raw oats into a bowl. Massage the mixture gently onto the skin for three to four minutes. Rinse the skin well with warm water to remove the mixture from the skin.
Step 3
Tone and hydrate your skin with lemon juice and olive oil. To tighten the pores of black skin, tone the skin with a natural acidic juice, like lemon juice. Soak a cotton pad in lemon juice and wipe it liberally on the skin. Once the lemon juice toner dries, apply a few drops of olive oil to the skin to moisturize it. Olive oil will not clog pores and absorbs easily into the skin. Pour three drops of olive oil into the palms of your hands, then rub them together to distribute the oil. Lightly pat the oil around the face.
Step 4
Spot treat the skin using tea tree oil. To treat acne breakouts, use tea tree oil to clear blemishes, instead of traditional benzoyl peroxide creams that dry out and irritate the skin. Tea tree oil kills acne-causing bacteria and will help dry up existing acne. Place two drops of tea tree oil onto a cotton pad, and add in four drops of water to dilute the oil. Apply the diluted oil to the acne breakouts three times a day.
