Keratin, the laminated layers of protein that make up your nails, are as protective as they are aesthetic. Strong nails help beatify your hands. To achieve strength, you need moisture and protection rather than multivitamins, supplements and nail soaks, which are ineffective, according to MayoClinic.com. A few simple steps can give you hands that are fit to shake, wave and show off.

Step 1

Examine your nails for signs of a fungal infection or underlying condition. Your nails offer clues to your health and can indicate problems such as malnutrition, diabetes, anemia or fungus---all of which can affect the strength of your nails. MayoClinic.com suggests checking with a doctor if you notice yellowing, nail pitting, opaque or white coloring, indentations or if nails begin to pull away from the nail bed .

Step 2

Protect your nails from breaking, splitting, chipping and drying. Wear gloves while cleaning with harsh chemicals, particularly bleach and ammonia-based cleaners, which can cause skin irritation as well as dry nails. If your hands are sensitive, wear gloves while washing dishes or anytime hands are immersed in water.

Step 3

Moisturize your fingernails, cuticles and hands often. A cream is preferred over a lotion, which is likely water-based and will therefore be less effective. EczemaNet reports that moisturizer forms a protective coating that reduces water loss. According to the site, the best time to apply moisturizer is while the skin is damp.

Step 4

Brush your nails with a light coat of hardener. It matters little if the product is a dollar-store find or an expensive salon brand, any product that seals in moisture will do. Avoid products containing chemicals that can irritate the skin, such as toluene sulfonamide or formaldehyde.

Step 5

Purchase a pair of cotton gloves. Wear them at bedtime after slathering your hands with moisturizer. The cotton fabric allows the hands to breathe while sealing in moisture. Within a few days, you should notice softer hands and stronger nails.

Things You'll Need
