Although fast food and chocolate treats are not the cause of acne, according to MayoClinc.com, dietary factors may play a role in acne. The affects of starchy foods such as bread and chips are being studied to determine whether they contribute to acne. No matter the cause, with the right foods and supplements acne may heal more quickly and cause less damage to the skin.

Omega-Rich Foods

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential to health. Since the body cannot produce them, they are derived from foods sources such as salmon, tuna, halibut, some plants and nut oils. They are widely known for their benefits to the heart, brain and joints, and often used in supplemental form for a range of health conditions. Concerning skin health, Omega- 3 fatty acids help reduce inflammation and skin sensitivity, as evidenced in clinical studies involving people with skin conditions. To get the skin-nourishing benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids, acne suffers can use olive oil for cooking and on salads, eat omega-rich fish and snack on raw seeds and nuts.

Zinc Supplements

Zinc, a trace mineral and element similar to iron in its concentration in the body, is vital to cell growth and division, the breakdown of carbohydrates and immune system functioning. It also helps promote wound healing and may be applied topically to help clear skin infections and acne lesions. Medline Plus says taking zinc by mouth or using zinc ointments that contain erythromycin seems to clear acne. MayoClinic.com also names zinc as one of the few supplements proven to help treat acne.

Echinacea

Echinacea, a popular herbal supplement derived from the flowering tops and roots of the echinacea plant, is a traditional cold and flu preventative that is commonly sold in pharmacies and health food stores. Its purported ability to boost the immune system may make it useful for fighting infections and keeping illnesses at bay. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine notes that people with skin problems including acne and boils may also use echinacea. Though results are not proven, echinacea may work on acne in two ways: by reducing bacteria-causing acne on the skin and promoting skin healing.
