Silicone lubricants are widely used to keep treadmill rollers in order, but this form of lubricant is not the only solution: Some treadmills require a wax lubricant. Check the manufacturer's manual for instructions about which of the two lubricants you should use to avoid damaging your equipment. Avoid petroleum-based lubricants, which have a lingering smell, can cause headaches and damage the treadmill.

Wax On, Wax Off

Some treadmill owners prefer wax to silicone because it is easier to remove during cleaning, before relubrication. Older machines are more likely to require wax than the newer treadmill models, but the most important thing is to make sure you can use the wax alternative. If you have lost the manual, check with the manufacturer. Wax lubricants come in a variety of forms, with a wax stick is one choice. You'll need to warm up the treadmill for about 20 minutes before applying the wax. The alternatives to a wax stick is wax in powder form. To use it, you sprinkle the powder on the front, middle and back of the belt and deck, then you blow it over the deck, wipe any excess off and walk on it for a minute to distribute the wax.
