Considered the first makeup of its kind, the Bare Escentual mineral makeup line was brought to the attention of the American consumer in the 1980s. Following its commercial success, other cosmetic manufacturers followed suit with their own product line, and as of 2010, mineral makeup is available from most cosmetic companies. Avon introduced their mineral foundation products in 2007. Although the Avon mineral makeup products contains more additives than the Bare Escentual line, the active ingredient in both mineral foundations is titanium dioxide, a natural occurring mineral. Both products are free of talc, oils or other additives.

Step 1

Compare the cost of each product. Avon products typically cost less and come in larger quantities. Understand the return policy of both companies before purchasing any products.

Step 2

Decide if you prefer the convenience of monthly delivery through the Bare Escentuals' membership program, or prefer to buy your cosmetics on an as needed basis from a retail establishment or a personal representative.

Step 3

Read the ingredient label and check for the active ingredients in each product line. Note whether you are allergic to any of the inactive ingredients. Consider whether your goal is to improve the condition of your skin or to simply provide a polished look to your makeup.

Step 4

Apply a sample of the Avon mineral base to one side of your face and the Bare Escentual mineral base to the other side of your face. Compare the look of each product on the skin. Observe the final color and whether a shiny or matte finish is most complementary to your skin type.

Step 5

Consider the types of products you will use on a daily basis. The Bare Escentuals' cosmetic line offers several kits and supplemental cosmetics. As of 2010, Avon's product line is limited to a mineral foundation, concealer, a blusher, eye color and liner.

Tips and Warnings

  • When applying any mineral based product, use the smallest amount possible and begin applying from the outside jawline towards the center of your face.
