What Do Fish Oil Pills Do?

Fish oil pills are a dietary supplement with several health benefits. Fish oil is an excellent source of omega-3, a heart-healthful fatty acid, according to the Mayo Clinic. Other sources of omega-3 include salmon, tuna, halibut and some nut oils, per the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMM). According to the American Heart Association, fish like mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna and salmon should be consumed twice per day.

Heart Health

In 2002 the American Heart Association (AHA) advisory committee carried out a study to identify the benefits of eating fish or consuming omega-3 fatty acids. Their findings support eating fish weekly to lower risks and complications associated with heart disease. This includes death from existing heart disease and reduced risk of stroke, per the AHA. The Mayo Clinic also outlines the evidence of lowered triglycerides in the blood, a reduction in hardening of the arteries, and a slight decrease in blood pressure in individuals consuming fish oil supplements or fish.

Pregnancy

The Mayo Clinic points out that a well-designed study is required before a conclusion that omega-3 is helpful in the development of the eyes and brain of infants during pregnancy. A contrasting point of view from UMM is that omega-3 fatty acids play a vital role in brain function and normal growth and development of the fetus during pregnancy. Pregnant women should avoid consuming fish with high mercury levels (for example, swordfish, shark and king mackerel), per UMM.

Side Effects

The most common complaint when taking fish oil is the taste or after effects. Freezing the fish oil capsule or purchasing odor-free supplements may reduce the fishy smell from belching or hiccuping after consumption. Mayo Clinic points out that high doses of omega-3 can increase the risk of bleeding. High levels of mercury or environmental pollutants can have negative consequences as well. The Mayo Clinic and AHA still maintain that the benefits of eating fish or taking omega-3 outweigh the possible risks.
