Vitamin B5, or pantothenic acid, is an essential nutrient needed by all living organisms. It can be found in almost all food types, and even in some bath and body products. B5 is also produced by the bacteria found the intestine. The body uses this vitamin to help metabolize carbohydrates, fatty acids and proteins, and it aids in cell metabolism.
How it Works
Acne is caused by clogged pores, due to the production of excess sebum, or oil, on the hair follicles. Vitamin B5, used topically or taken orally, helps to reduce the amount of oil produced within the skin. Because the initial use of B5 can remove so much oil, some people may experience an increase in acne, while others may not experience any effect at all.
Side Effects
While vitamin B5 is a water-soluble vitamin, some people experience side effects including diarrhea, mild stomach irritation and headache. If you develop any of these side effects, stop taking treatments immediately and contact your doctor. There have not been any accounts of a B5 deficiency, but there are not sufficient studies to measure the effects of this drug when taken in high doses.
Types
Vitamin B5 can be taken in pill or powder form, and used as a topical or oral supplement. In powder form, it is dissolved in water and applied topically or you can drink it. In pill form, it is taken as an oral dose, as recommended by your physician or dermatologist.
