Cardio exercises are great for losing weight. Cardio exercises get your heart beating faster and your metabolism working faster. They also burn calories and that physical activity causes you to drop the weight. Typically, cardio exercise require your body to work hard for short durations. The best cardio workouts are ones that appeal to you, because you will do them on a regular basis. That's how they will provide the most benefit.

Sprint Routines

Go to the high school or college track. Mark off sprint distances of 100, 90, 80 and 70 yards. Sprint 100 yards and then immediately sprint 90 yards. Go back to the start line and do the 80-yard sprint and follow that with a 70-yarder. Take a two-minute break and then do the sprint set again. Do at least two sets of sprints every time you go to the track and try to get there at least three times per week. This will burn 400 to 500 calories.

Racquetball

Racquetball is one of the best cardio workouts. You are in an enclosed room going front to back and side to side at full speed for 45 minutes to an hour in a typical racquetball game. A 190-lb. man will burn 863 calories in an hour when playing racquetball.

Walking

You don't have to be a world-class athlete to do cardio exercises. If you are just in the beginning stages of getting in shape—or if you just like walking—you can do this exercise by walking briskly for 25 to 35 minutes. If you live in an area where there is a lot of ice, snow and cold weather, go to the mall and walk briskly there. Walking at a high rate of speed with your arms pumping will allow a 190-lb. man to burn about 300 calories an hour while walking at a moderate pace (3 miles per hour)
