Lactobacillus Uses

Lactobacillus is a probiotic, or friendly bacteria, which normally stays in the digestive, urinary and reproductive systems. It is present in fermented foods such as yogurt and dairy products. There are many types of lactobacillus, but the most commonly used probiotic is the Lactobacillus acidophilus. Lactobacillus acidophilus is considered beneficial because it contains vitamin K, lactase and antimicrobial substances. It is typically used to treat and prevent different types of bacteria and fungal infections.

Treatment for Diarrhea

Diarrhea is not identified as a disease, but rather a symptom of an underlying disorder. A common symptom of diarrhea is the frequent passing of loose, watery stools. Lactobacillus is often used to treat traveler's diarrhea, which is caused by eating contaminated foods. Lactobacillus helps eliminate infectious, disease-causing bacteria and viral conditions by increasing the amount of intestinal flora in the body. According to the Whole Foods Cooperation website, all probiotics may not prevent diarrhea that is associated with antibiotics. Those affected by persistent diarrhea should see a physician because diarrhea may result from a serious problem.

Lactose Intolerance

People who are lactose intolerant are not able to digest the lactose or major sugar found in milk products; they may experience discomfort and cramps. According to MedlinePlus, lactobacillus may be helpful in improving lactose intolerance in sufferers of this condition. Lactobacillus acidophilus is important in the fermentation of diary products such as acidophilus milk. Acidophilus milk is typically consumed by people who suffer from lactose maldigestion. Lactobacillus is a good source of lactase, the enzyme accountable for the digestion of milk sugars.

Vaginal Infections

Lactobacillus acidophilus suppositories can treat bacterial vaginosis, or BV. Bacterial vaginosis is a condition in which there is an overgrowth of normal bacteria in the vagina and as a result, a disruption in the normal balance of vaginal bacteria. Bacterial vaginosis is often accompanied by pain, itching, discharge, odor and burning. Lactobacillus can also treat vaginitis, which is an inflammation in the vagina caused by infection from fungal and bacterial organisms. According to the Supplement News website, lactobacillus is very effective as a treatment in preventing Candida overgrowth, or a yeast infection.
