Cleansing diets remove toxins from the body and can lead to weight loss, according to Vanderbilt University. While some cleansing diets will cost you an upfront fee, you can find free cleansing diets, such as fasting, that will provide you with the same benefits.

History

Fasting became an original form of cleansing the body, as a short-term fast can remove many harmful toxins. Vanderbilt University suggests that fasting prevents your body from spending energy on digestive organs, which helps the body to cleanse itself naturally. Over the years, improved research has brought new diets to the forefront and many of these cleanse diets hold value.

Function

People follow cleanse diets because they believe that they remove toxins from the body quickly and efficiently. Vanderbilt University suggests that fasting can help you to remove these toxins from the body, without it costing you any money at all. Drinking fruit juice while you fast will provide you with additional energy and will help with the cleansing process, without breaking the bank.

Types

Various cleansing diets exist, with each calling for followers to eat and drink fruits, teas and juices. Perhaps the most popular cleanse diet remains the master cleanse diet, which calls for you to consume one 60-ounce drink per day, followed by a cup of tea in the evening. According to Harvard Medical School, the drink that you consume includes lemon juice, water, cayenne pepper and maple syrup.

Time Frame

You must follow different diets for different periods of time, as they all have different cleansing schedules. You should follow the master cleanse diet for at least 10-days, while EveryDiet.org reports that a fruit-based cleanse diet only take three-days to follow. The length of time that you should follow a diet depends for on what you consume while on the diet and how comfortable you remain during this time.

Benefits

You will find many benefits when researching cleansing diets, depending on the type of diet that you follow. For example, EveryDiet.org reports that sticking to a diet of at least 75 percent raw food can help with a cleanse, as raw food contains enzymes that the cooking process removes. At the same time, some believe that a fruit-based diet removes toxins from the body, while increasing energy levels and liver function.
