Acetic Acid, Vinegar & Weight Loss
Vinegar contains a substance called acetic acid, which has been connected with weight loss in the past. Specifically, a study at the Central Research Institute in Tokyo showed that acetic acid helps cells make a protein that breaks down fat. However, the study was performed on mice, and no comparable study has been carried out on humans.
Why Vinegar May Help You Shed Pounds
Apple cider vinegar is the kind of vinegar you should stock up on if you'd like to use it as a part of your weight loss program. This vinegar can help you burn fat and lowers your cholesterol. Since it contains a fiber called apple pectin, apple cider vinegar can absorb cholesterol and fats from within the body and flush them out of your system. Other possible reasons vinegar might contribute to weight loss is its ability to detoxify the liver, boost metabolism, reduce appetite and kill candida or yeast in the gut, the presence of which can make you crave sugar and carbohydrates and gain weight.
Warnings
While there is loose scientific evidence to back up these ideas, there isn't enough solid evidence to thoroughly link vinegar with weight loss. Consuming too much vinegar can actually be harmful to your body, causing tooth erosion, irritation of the throat or stomach, decreased potassium levels, and bone loss. Too much vinegar may also interfere with certain drugs, such as diuretics. Your best bet is to tread cautiously when incorporating vinegar into your weight-loss plan. Always consult with your doctor before supplementing.
