Polar manufactures several models of portable heart rate monitors that are worn as a watch. These small monitors receive heart rate data from a chest strap worn by the user. Due to the design and waterproof features, these devices are not intended to be repaired by the owner; all owner repairs that involve opening the monitor housing will void the warranty. If your Polar heart monitor is not working, try a few troubleshooting steps first. If these do not resolve the issue, send the monitor to Polar's service center for the proper repair that will keep the warranty intact.

Step 1

Attach the transmitter strap to your chest. Make sure the strap is snug and positioned just below the chest with the sensors in front. The sensors must be in tight contact with the skin.

Check the monitor for a heart rate reading. Erratic readings or heart rates that are too high or display "0" indicate a poor connection.

Step 2

Wet the sensors on the chest strap with a little bit of warm water or saliva if you still do not get a reading. Electric conductivity is increased by moisture. Do not use Vaseline, KY Jelly or other lubricants.

Step 3

Replace the battery in the chest strap transmitter if the monitor displays time and date, but still shows no heart rate data.

Tips and Warnings

  • Always keep your chest strap and monitor clean. After each use, wipe the components down with a damp, clean towel to remove sweat and dirt. Gently dry the components with another towel.
  • Do not attempt to open the monitor or the transmitter case. This will void the warranty and will involve an expensive repair to make the heart rate monitor work correctly again.
