Purine is a natural substance normally found in many healthy foods, according to FamilyDoctor.org. When the body digests purine, it produces uric acid as a waste product, and the uric acid can cause gout, a painful type of arthritis. If you're eating a lot of high-purine foods, you may be aggravating your gout.
