Humans need energy to function properly, so getting enough energy through your daily diet remains very important. Certain foods contain more energy than others do, which means that you should gain awareness of the foods that provide you with the largest long-term energy boost. By following an energy-rich diet, you can ensure that you always have enough energy to get through your day.

Function

When you follow a diet that gives you more energy, you can expect to function better throughout the day. According to the National Institutes of Health, your body will break down all of the food that you consume and turn it into energy. The body needs this energy for all movement, thought processes, body growth and body functions. Thus, a high-energy diet will help all of these processes.

Types

The easiest way to give yourself additional energy is to eat carbohydrates. Iowa State University reports that the body breaks carbohydrates down into glycogen, which the body turns into energy at a much more rapid pace than it does other food types. The body can also turn fat and protein into energy, but it uses carbohydrates more easily, so you will feel the energy boost soon after consuming them.

Misconceptions

Many people believe that eating high-energy foods will lead to weight gain. While this idea does hold merit, you will not gain weight if you burn off the calories over the course of the day, as the body will use all of the calories that you consume. The National Institutes of Health suggests that the number of calories that your body needs to function depends on your height, weight and age, so research these factors to prevent weight gain.

Benefits

When you put more energy into your body, you will have the ability to do more throughout the day. This holds particular importance for active people, such as athletes. Iowa State University suggests a solid diet can maximize an athlete's performance throughout an event. If you compete on a regular basis, keeping your energy levels high at all times should take importance in your life.

Warning

You must maintain a high level of activity to make use of this additional energy. According to the National Institutes of Health, any diet should include exercise because your body will store excess energy as fat. If you eat foods that give you more energy but you exercise less, you will surely see significant weight gain in a short period of time.
