The Western World has consumed lemon and hot water in various forms since the fruit was introduced by Arab travelers in the 12th century. While some people simply squeeze fresh lemon into boiling water and others add additional components like ginseng and honey, the health benefits and home remedies that come with regular consumption of lemon and hot water, or lemon tea, are many and well-documented.
Stomach
Lemon is effective in reducing indigestion. Because lemon is a natural cleansing agent, it also reduces nausea and heartburn as well as bloating and gas. Regular lemon juice ingestion can relieve constipation and help the bowels to become more regular. Lemon also assists the liver in creating bile, allowing for better digestion. Some correlation as been found between lemon and the dissolving of gall stones.
Throat
Lemon tea is a natural sore throat remedy, particularly for those who are suffering from a cold. The warm water helps with lubrication and stops dehydration. The lemon itself contains antibacterial qualities that help fight off infections and tonsillitis. Dr. Raman Abrol, a senior consultant of ENT, also recommends lemon to help clear up mucus in the throat. Lemon and hot water, or lemon in various herbal teas, is regularly used by professional singers because it can help keep the throat lubricated and soothed.
Blood and Skin
Lemon is a natural antioxidant, and contains vitamins C, B and riboflavin and calcium, phosphorus and magnesium. For example, one whole lemon contains 77 mg of vitamin C, according to the Vitamin C Foundation. These vitamins help the blood to flush out toxins, as does hot water, which will help the body stay hydrated and fight off disease more effectively. Regular, nonintrusive detoxification of the body can reduce your chance of developing certain cancers.
Because lemon is a natural antiseptic and rich in vitamin C, lemon tea is also good for the skin. When put directly on the skin, it can be used to treat blackheads, reduce wrinkles, and help to fade scars. When drunk regularly, some cultures believe it can help bring a glow to the face. In cases of sunburn, it can reduce the burning sensation.
