The Nutrisystem diet offers pre-packaged meals to those wishing to lose weight and control portion sizes. The diet is designed to take the guesswork out of meal planning --- fresh fruits, vegetables and dairy are added to the pre-packaged meals to provide needed vitamins and minerals. Knowing more about the Nutrisystem diet can help you determine if it is the right choice for you.

Features

Since 1972, the Nutrisystem meal plan has offered prepackaged meals as a means to help dieters learn about portion sizes and how to make healthy choices, according to Diets in Review.com. In addition to healthy food, the diet emphasizes convenience --- little preparation and cooking is required. The foods are low in saturated fats and contain fiber. In addition to the Nutrisystem foods, you also may eat vegetables and fruits from your local grocery store.

Types

Nutrisystem offers six types of meal plans, which are geared toward gender, age and food preferences, according to The Diet Channel. These plans include a woman's, men's, silver for men, silver for women, a type II diabetic and all-vegetarian plan. Each meal plan comes with a Nutrisystem "meal planner" that allows you to keep up with foods eaten.

Daily Meal Plan

The Nutrisystem diet involves eating five times per day, according to Diet TV. Breakfast consists of a Nutrisystem breakfast coupled with one dairy and fruit serving from home. Lunch is a Nutrisystem lunch entrée with a protein and fruit serving. An afternoon snack consists of a Nutrisystem bar, a dairy or protein serving and a fruit serving. Dinner is a Nutrisystem dinner entrée, two vegetable servings, one salad or fruit serving and then one serving of fat. The last serving of the day is a Nutrisystem dessert.

Food Examples

Because preparation for Nutrisystem meals most frequently requires heating, the prepackaged foods consist of dehydrated pasta and rice dishes, bars, powders and other foods to which water can be added. The Nutrisystem meals do not utilize any foods that need refrigeration although you may add your own items that require refrigeration. Other foods include banana spice muffins, pizzas, biscotti and chocolate fudge cake.

Menu Selection

Your specific meal plan depends both on the type of Nutrisystem program you choose and your own personal preferences, according to the Nutrisystem website. You are invited to customize your menu, or you can select from a "favorites" menu that contains Nutrisystem recommendations for meal plans.
