Adipex-P, the brand name of phentermine, is a prescription medication used along with diet and exercise for weight loss in obese patients. It belongs to class of drugs called the anorexiants and works by stimulating a gland called the hypothalamus. By stimulating the hypothalamus, the patient will see a decrease in appetite. Many side effects may occur with phentermine. If the patient has any concerns, he should discuss any questions with a health care professional.
Diarrhea or Constipation
Drugs.com reports that Adipex-P can lead to diarrhea or constipation, depending on how the patient's body reacts to the medication. The patient may try over-the-counter medications for either condition, but should speak with a pharmacist or physician first to decide which product is best. If constipation or diarrhea continues for more than three days or becomes severe, the individual should contact her physician immediately.
Upset Stomach
Upset stomach or stomach pain may be present in individuals who use Adipex-P. The patient may also experience dry mouth or an unpleasant taste in the mouth. Chewing gum may help to avoid these adverse reactions. The patient should call a health care professional if these side effects persist.
High Blood Pressure
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, may occur in patients on Adipex-P. Individuals who have hypertension should use caution when using this drug. Those with severe hypertension should avoid the use of Adipex-P, according to the "Drug Information Handbook." The patient should keep all physician appointments to make sure that the blood pressure is within normal range.
Increased Heart Rate and Irregular Heart beats
Adipex-P may lead to an increase in the heart rate or irregular heartbeats. Patients who have irregular heartbeats should not use the medication. If the patient develops chest pain, shortness of breath or palpitations, he should seek medical care right away.
Sexual Dysfunction
Men on Adipex-P may develop impotence, which is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection. Adipex-P may alter the patient's libido, or desire for sex. These side effects may affect daily life; the patient should speak with a physician if they occur. The physician can determine if the individual needs to switch to a different medication.
Changes in Behavior and Function
Adipex-P works on the hypothalamus, which is in the brain, and may therefore cause side effects that affect normal behavior and function. The side effects seen on the brain include dizziness, restlessness and headache. PubMed Health states that the patient may develop tremors, insomnia and an enhanced feeling of well-being.
