How to Reduce Cellulite

Cellulite is lumpy skin that appears on the thighs, hips and buttocks of many women, according to the Mayo Clinic. Cellulite occurs when the mesh-like connecting fibers between the skin and the muscle stretch tightly over fat, creating a cottage-cheese like appearance in the areas of the body that contain the most fat. There are many products touted as cellulite treatments on the market, but not all of them are medically proven to remove cellulite.

Step 1

Lose weight by eating healthy foods and exercising. Losing weight, especially in problem areas like the buttocks, thighs and hip areas, will help reduce the appearance of cellulite. When the connecting tissues between the skin and the muscle are not pressing against a smaller amount of fat, the appearance of cellulite will be less noticeable. You can lose weight by eating a diet of lean proteins, healthy unsaturated fats and fresh fruits and vegetables. Exercise by elevating your heart rate for at least 30 minutes, three times a week or more.

Step 2

Avoid over-the-counter creams and lotions. According to the Mayo Clinic, cellulite creams are not medically proven to remove cellulite or create any significant difference.

Step 3

Consult your dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon about laser treatments. Laser treatments involve treating problem areas of the skin with an infrared laser to smooth out protruding lumpy areas of fat. This process, according to the Mayo Clinic, may take a series of twice-weekly treatments for any improvement to occur.

Step 4

Get a massage. Getting a negative tissue massage on problem areas like the buttocks and thighs will increase blood flow and reduce swelling due to fluid buildup. Although this may not be a permanent solution for cellulite, it may temporarily reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Step 5

Try mesotherapy. Mesotherapy is a vitamin, mineral or hormone solution that is injected into problem areas of the skin to smooth out lumpy areas. Mesotherapy may produce negative side effects, including skin bumpiness and rashes, states to the Mayo Clinic.

Tips and Warnings

  • Focus on strength training during your workouts to increase muscle and lose fat.
