Anchorage, Alaska, features more than 400 miles of diverse trails. Though some are used for activities such as dog mushing and cross-country skiing, hiking remains the primary way in which to enjoy them. Anchorage is home to three clubs that offer members the opportunity to hike in groups.

Benefits

The benefits of hiking include improved strength, stamina and mental health. Hiking also brings people into a personal relationship with the environment in a way that encourages stewardship toward the land. Hiking in a group can be even more beneficial, adding in the social element that most humans crave. Hiking clubs are inclusive, generally welcoming people of all ages and levels, although some hikes may specify a more difficult terrain, not suitable for children or beginners.

Clubs

Clubs in Anchorage that offer group hikes include the Mountaineering Club of Alaska, the Anchorage Adventurers and the Sierra Club, Alaska Chapter. The Mountaineering Club of Alaska was founded in 1958 and exists for those interested in pursuing hiking, climbing, skiing and mountain biking. The Mountaineering Club sponsors events and offers training. The Anchorage Adventurers was founded in 1997 and organizes frequent group hikes as well as other outdoor activities. It welcomes outdoor enthusiasts of all levels. The Sierra Club is a national club for outdoor recreation and activism that offers occasional hikes for members in Anchorage.

Trails

Anchorage is situated within south-central Alaska, within one of the most pristine natural areas left in the country. Chugach State Park, the third largest state park in the U.S., borders Anchorage and offers hikers and hiking clubs dozens of trails at all levels of difficulty. Hikers can expect to encounter alpine wildflowers, glacier-fed rivers, moose, eagles mountain vistas, mature spruce forests and possibly even a wolf or grizzly. The Alaska Department of Natural Resources website provides a complete guide to state parks and trails in Alaska (see "Resources").

Preservation

The mission statement of most hiking clubs, including those in Anchorage, includes the importance of preservation of hiking trails and other natural recreational spaces. The Mountaineering Club of Alaska members actively help maintain the trails in parks and recreation areas around Anchorage. The Alaska Chapter of The Sierra Club encourages issues-based activism that works to preserve Alaska's natural resources.

Warnings

Hiking with a club is always a safer option than hiking solo, but especially in and around Anchorage. Even within the city limits, it is not uncommon to encounter potentially dangerous wildlife, such as moose and bears. Alaska hiking clubs teach important safety considerations that are specific to the area, including how to handle wildlife encounters and how to prevent hypothermia and frostbite in Alaska's subzero winters. Never hike in Alaska without fully understanding the specific safety considerations of the area.
