Overview

Soy offers a rich source of antioxidants that fight free radicals, which can damage and destroy the body's cells and tissue. Soy products are good for both the inside and outside of the body. Making your own soy lotion is fun, inexpensive and effective. Create a soy lotion by combining unscented soy lotion, soy body butter or soy wax base with oils or fragrances to suit your skin care needs. To create any lotion, you'll need three essential ingredients: water, the emulsion (or soy-based lotion or cream) and essential oils or fragrances.

Step 1

Mix approximately 8 oz. of soy lotion base with 2 oz. of shea butter, avocado oil or any other oil of your choice for desired texture. You may also use the soy lotion base alone, adding drops of essential oils or fragrance according to your preferences. Adding shea butter to the recipe creates a creamier texture and appearance to the soy lotion, and offers additional skin-softening benefits.

Step 2

Blend the ingredients into a glass or metal bowl according to your preference for thickness, scent and texture. This is the best time to experiment with various combinations. If it seems too thick, add 1 tsp. at a time of water, blending well in between additions. If you want a stronger scent, add more, but start small so you don't waste your base or end up with a too-strong smelling lotion. If you add too much oil or scent, add another 2 oz. of soy lotion base and blend again.

Step 3

Scoop lotion into glass containers or jars with tight-fitting lids. You can use a spatula to scrape the lotion from the mixing bowl to the container after making sure ingredients are well blended.

Step 4

Store the lotion in a cool environment, such as under the bathroom or kitchen sink, or in a cupboard away from heat of stoves or showers. Shelf life will depend on the ingredients, climate and temperature, but most soy-based lotions keep well for up to about three months.

Tips and Warnings

  • Purchase essential oils or extracts such as grapefruit seed extract and rosemary oil from your local beauty supply or natural food store. Essential oils should contain vitamin E or wheat germ oil for smooth skin, or other sources containing anti-oxidant properties.
