With dozens of options to choose from, finding the anti-aging skin care products that will give you the results you want can be an intimidating process. Knowing what to look for can make the process much simpler. Keep in mind that sun damage is a major cause of wrinkles and age spots, and many anti-aging treatments make your skin more susceptible to sun damage, so make a good sunscreen the first ingredient in your anti-aging skin care regimen.
Cost
Cost is one of the worst predictors of effectiveness when you're shopping for anti-aging skin products, found the Good Housekeeping Research Institute during its investigation of anti-aging products, according to "Good Housekeeping" magazine editor-in-chief Rosemary Ellis on "Good Morning America." Though some expensive products do deliver results, the institute found that many of the most effective treatments cost less than $40.
Criteria
The Good Housekeeping Research Institute uses a set of four criteria to measure the effects of anti-aging skin products. First, it considers the reduction in the number of wrinkles, age spots and other signs of skin damage after using the product. It also considers changes in color, size and depth of wrinkles, spots and dark patches. The institute also evaluates the firmness of skin after using a product. Finally, the institute measures the moisture level in skin.
Ingredients
When you're shopping for anti-aging skin care products, look for ingredients that deliver results, recommends MayoClinic.com. Retinol, a compound derived from vitamin A, is a strong exfoliator that can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and discoloration. Hydroxy acids are gentler exfoliators than retinol but have a similar skin-refreshing effect. Coenzyme Q10 may help reduce some wrinkles. Copper peptides stimulate collagen production and may help antioxidant work more effectively. Kinetin may help reduce wrinkles and discoloration. Green tea extracts reduce inflammation.
Misconceptions
People associate wrinkles with old age, but according to "Allure" magazine, it's age spots and skin discoloration that age you the most -- "Allure" says these tell-tale signs of skin damage can make you look up to 15 years older. If you're not noticing an improvement in your skin, it may be because you're focusing on wrinkles instead of discoloration. The best way to reduce this problem is to use a combination exfoliating scrub and skin lightener over your entire face -- "Allure" says it should improve your overall skin tone in about three months.
Warning
Some anti-aging products can have strong side effects, including rashes, skin irritation, redness and burning, warns MayoClinic.com. To minimize your risk, always follow the directions on the package or from your dermatologist, only use one new anti-aging product at a time and start with the smallest recommended dose. If you experience difficulty breathing or other signs of serious allergic reaction, seek medical attention immediately.
