The Nutrisystem Diet is an online-based diet program that provides an avenue to purchase prepackaged meals and snacks to help with weight loss. The diet plan is based on the theory of the glycemic index, which states that the best way to lose weight is to prevent severe fluctuations in blood sugar levels. The diet is also centered around portion control, which is provided through the prepackaged meals.

Diet Basics

After signing up for the Nutrisystem program, you create a 28-day food menu by selecting prepackaged meals from a list of 150. You can also choose a pre-selected Favorite Foods Package.

After you've made your choices, choose from one of two delivery options. A single 28-day program can be delivered or you can select auto-delivery for automatic delivery of a 28-day program every month. The auto-delivery option comes with a discount.

Plans

The Nutrisystem Diet website has three diet plans. The women's plan includes prepackaged breakfasts, lunches, dinners and desserts. The men's plan includes the same as the women's plan with an extra prepackaged snack included. There is also a diabetic's plan, which involves eating small low-glycemic index meals six times per day to help keep blood sugar levels steady throughout the day.

Meal Examples

Some breakfast choices include oatmeal, granola cereal, muffins, granola bars and scrambled eggs. Lunch choices include chicken salad, broccoli soup, three cheese pasta and meal replacement bars. Available dinner options are cheese ravioli, chili, flatbread pizza and macaroni and cheese. Possible desserts and snacks include pudding, biscotti, chips, dessert bars and hot cocoa.

Cost

The Nutrisystem website states that the Nutrisystem plan costs $11.00 per day, as of 2010. This would equal $77.00 a week, $2,310 a month and $27,720.00 per year for a single person.

Considerations

The Nutrisystem website also offers a membership community where you can plan meals, track progress and join discussion boards with other dieters. The website also offers unlimited support and counseling services from weight loss advisers, an online newsletter and daily weight loss advice.
