Peppermint oil is oil made from the peppermint herb. This herb is a cross between water mint and spearmint. Peppermint oil has many uses, including as a flavoring for foods and candies, in teas and medicinally. It is used by many people as a treatment for headaches and migraines. The University of Maryland Medical Center explains that peppermint oil has shown to be effective in relieving headache pain in early studies. It is not a proven method of treatment, and patients should consult with a physician for dosage recommendations.
Directly on the Skin
Step 1
Place two or three drops of peppermint oil into the palm of your hand and rub your hands together for 5 seconds to heat the oil, releasing the fragrance.
Step 2
Place your hands on your forehead and temples for one minute, allowing the peppermint oil to soak into your skin. You can also place your hands on the back of your neck if the migraine is caused by tension.
Step 3
Massage one drop of peppermint oil into your temples by rubbing one finger from each hand in a circular motion using gentle pressure.
On a Washcloth
Step 1
Pour 1 cup of cold water into a bowl and add two drops of peppermint oil to the water.
Step 2
Place the washcloth into the water and peppermint oil solution, then wring out the excess water.
Step 3
Fold the washcloth in half and place over your forehead and eyes, making sure your eyes are closed. Leave the cloth in place until it is no longer cold to touch.
Step 4
Dip the washcloth into the solution again and repeat until your migraine subsides, or as long as desired.
Tips and Warnings
- Place the wet washcloth in the freezer for five minutes for extra coolness and added pain relief. Use peppermint oil in a quiet, dark room while lying down for additional pain relief.
