Estrogen, generally considered a female hormone, is a very important hormone for both genders. Estrogen supports healthy bone mass, strong joints, reproductive capabilities and is even linked to memory and cognitive abilities, according to the University of Florida. As you get older, particularly if you are a women, estrogen levels decrease and can lead to deficiencies that present serious health risks. Many opt and benefit from hormone replacement therapy, but before you consider that route, you should consult your doctor and also become familiar with foods that can raise your estrogen naturally.

Flaxseed

Flaxseed has the highest concentration of natural estrogen of any food source, according to Dietary Fiber Foods. Phytoestrogens are natural plant-like estrogens that are associated with a lowered risk of breast cancer, prostate cancer and heart disease. They are also thought to promote healthy and strong bones. Flax also is rich in lignans, which are a special type of phytoestrogens with estrogenic activity and antioxidant properties, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Flaxseed can be eaten whole, but many people prefer to grind them add them to baked goods or protein shakes. The ground form is often preferred because the act of grinding breaks open the hard seed coat of the flaxseed, allowing the nutrients to be absorbed by the body rather than passing through your system undigested. If grinding is not convenient for you, talk to you doctor about a flaxseed oil dietary supplement.

Soy

Soy beans and foods made from soy beans are among the sources richest in natural phytoestrogens, according to the Dietary Fiber Food website. Like flaxseed, soy has unique phytoestrogens called isoflavones. The Department of Pathology at Wake Forest University claims that natural dietary soy isoflavones are a promising food agent in the prevention of breast cancer. Soy milk, soy yogurt, tofu, miso and meatless soy products should be on the shelves at your local grocery store. If you need a more convenient source of phytoestrogens and protein, ask your doctor about a soy protein supplement.

Multigrain Bread

Other than flaxseed bread, multigrain bread is the bread choice highest in natural phytoestrogens according to the Dietary Fiber Foods website. Consider substituting multigrain bread for other types of bread that you may use.

Seeds and Sprouts

Seeds and sprouts are among the foods with the highest concentrations of phytoestrogens. Specifically, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, alfalfa bean sprouts and mung bean sprouts are the best choices for naturally raising your estrogen levels. Sprouts and seeds can be eaten whole, but may be even more tasty as a healthful addition to a salad.
