In spite of its urban growth and metropolitan feel, Philly has plenty to offer the outdoor enthusiast. Singles living in the city can still enjoy the great outdoors and meet new people by seeking out clubs organized around their favorite activities. If you love to hike, there are many hiking clubs in the Philadelphia area that organize hikes for singles as well as other groups like families, couples and seniors.
Hiking Clubs in Philadelphia
Hikers who want to explore city trails will enjoy the "Hiking Around Philly" group. Founded by a former teacher and high school coach, this group's past events have combined hiking with activities like movies, jazz concerts and bike rides. Hiking Around Philly has an ambitious events calendar that includes a mix of singles and couples.
Hiking Clubs for Singles
The Sierra Club of Southeastern Pennsylvania offers a singles program which organizes singles-only events for members. In addition to hiking the singles program offers camping excursions and neighborhood concerts. There is no additional charge to join the group for Sierra Club members.
Outdoor Clubs
The Outdoor Club of South Jersey is a nonprofit hiking club that offers single memberships as well as family memberships. The club doesn't limit itself to hiking, and also organizes camping, backpacking, canoeing, cross-country skiing and cycling events. Outings are made up of a mix of singles, couples and families in southern New Jersey and Philadelphia.
The Allentown Hiking Club has been "(stimulating) public interests in every phase of nature and the outdoors through programs and lecturers." AHC yearly memberships for both singles and households are available.
Hiking and Conservation Clubs
The BATONA Hiking Club is an adult organization of hiking enthusiasts who also maintain trails as part of their mission; they serve the Appalachian, Horse Shoe and BATONA trails. Their hikes are longer and more strenuous than urban hikes, but adult singles, couples and groups are welcome. The BATONA club does not charge membership fees and instead charges participants per hike.
Start Your Own Group
There are websites -- see References -- with platforms that allow you to create your own group and tailor it to your specifications.
